Returning After Twenty Years

A return to an old campus, where the difficult beginnings and ordinary tenderness of youth meet again.

It is a winter afternoon full of clear light. I stand again before the sandstone buildings, towers, and courtyard arches. More than twenty years have passed as quietly as vines spreading over a wall.

The student I once was returns easily: dropped into a new language, unable to understand or speak with confidence, hovering at the edge of unfamiliar classes and an uncertain future. Yet there were also Christmas songs sung without inhibition, young faces laughing, and the deep-night silence of a library open around the clock.

I remember high shelves, broad wooden tables, old paper, and coffee before dawn. Anxiety about study and youth was steadied by ordinary duties in the kitchen: opening the dishwasher, hearing its low hum, and feeling warm steam rise. Serious study and modest daily life fitted together, allowing a suspended heart to come gently back to earth.

At formal dinners, long tables filled beneath the timber ceiling. The High Table stood at the front; guest speakers talked in soft light while silverware sounded now and then. Those ceremonial evenings belong to the same memory as confusion, fatigue, friendship, and washing dishes.

Standing here decades later, I understand that none of it was incidental. Struggle, laughter, private discouragement, and brief moments of ease were all pieces of becoming. Time has worn away their sharpest edges and left something quieter: gratitude for every experience, and especially for each person who marked the journey.
